Being left-handed isn’t always easy — especially when it comes to playing guitar. Most instruments are built for right-handers, and in Jimi Hendrix’s case, even his father wasn’t on his side.
Jimi was a natural lefty, but his father, Al, insisted he play right-handed, believing that playing left-handed was somehow “the work of the devil.”
Instead of giving in, Jimi flipped his guitar, restrung it so the lowest notes were still on the bottom, and taught himself to play his way. But to keep peace at home, he also learned to play right-handed — with the strings still upside down.
In the end, Hendrix mastered both. The result? A sound and style no one had ever heard before.
